Digital Cameras for Classroom Projects

Posted by: Brian | October 4, 2007 |

Hamilton Cameras

Consider having your students work on a digital photo project this year! Think of the possibilities! For example, if you’re a science teacher, students could take pictures of different types of clouds and make a PowerPoint! Or, they could make a story using Photo Story (see TRT Services)! I have available a set of digital cameras that students can use, along with two video cameras that each school has.

I attended the ISTE in Atlanta this summer (’07) and attended a workshop on digital projects with Dr. Arnie Abrams (Southern Oregon University). Click here for great resources!

Wow - what a great idea. Fill me in on the details and let’s get started.

I already sent this but it didn’t show up. I hope I know what I am doing. I would absolutely love to do this activity with my kids. When we do the algebra unit they can take pictures of their algebra mat projects. When we cover geometry, they can take pictures of shapes that we see in nature, etc. Oh - this will be great. SIGN ME UP!!!

You are signed up! I have two great books that are full of lesson plans and resources for us to use. One of my Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute teachers this summer took pictures of geometric shapes in CW and is making a big unit from it. She also took pictures of patterns in the carpets there. We’ll have fun teaching this unit!

Brian,
On the science front, I’ve been able to take pictures with a normal point and shoot digital (Nikon Coolpix 3200, nothing fancy) through the eyepiece of a microscope.
(see http://whs.wiscasset.k12.me.us/science/ for an example) . This is what happens when an art teacher wanders into a science lab . . :)

Kids could do great diagrams with this as a starting point, or using the pics in a presentation, etc.

Brian,
Okay…got to know. Are those the set of cameras you have in the picture? Where did you get them?
Tina

Hey there, could I use one for a VAAP student? She has to make story maps (reading and picture graphs for math) and it might make it a little more interesting if I can figure out how to use it for such things. Thanks, BW

Hi Tina–those cameras are Hamilton Cameras. If you do a web search on those, you’ll get a hit with the information. My supervisor extraordianaire supported all of us with a set of those. They’re awesome. One of my K classes last year did a video project on Photo Story with these. Their video was entitled, “Letters in Nature.”

Hi Becky–that’s a great idea. Stop by my office so that we can plan.
