I.T. people ARE like “Chuck!”

My colleagues and I have enjoyed the adventures of “Chuck” (NBC/Monday nights/8:00 p.m.) and I wonder: can I.T. people, known for their quiet and peaceful ways, really have adventures like our counterpart on NBC? Yes! It’s true!

I can relate from my five summers in China. One of my fondest memories was holding to the side of an old boat in China as we went down a rain swollen river after a typhoon. We were attempting to go to the front of the boat (around 30′ long) after sitting in the back near the old engine. Tired of smoke choking us and being unable to breathe, we knew we had only one option: head to the front. Sarah and I looked at the raging current around us and as we looked down the side of the boat. The width of the walkway was about two feet, and the only thing to keep us from falling into the whirlpools was an old rusty thin chain. I looked at her and said, “You know, if we fall over, we die!” We grinned and said, “Let’s do it!” As the two of us carefully inched along the side holding on to whatever we could, Sarah looked at me and said, “Mom is going to kill you, dad, if she finds out what we did!” The current was approximately 25 MPH, and just inches from our feet, it seemed to want to reach up and grab us. However, we finally made it to the front and realized the rush one gets from adventure.

And so, yes, I.T. people are similar to Indiana Jones, or Chuck: quiet and peaceful at work, and wild off hours!
