Mammal or Reptile?

The students are learning about different animals in science this 9 weeks and were asked to do a project to show what they have learned.  For the past 3 weeks we have been learning the difference between mammals and reptiles.  They were asked to do a diorama or poster on either a mammal or reptile showing their habitat.  Several students completed the project and what they turned in was amazing!  I have many pictures of their projects and was very impressed with what they came up with!  I know you will find it amazing also!  Our next project is due on March 13th and I am asking the students to create a poster on either the frog life cycle or the butterfly life cycle.  I look forward to seeing those posters in a few weeks!

Enjoy the pictures of this project!

The past 3 weeks, we have been studying Natural Resources.  In this unit, the students learned all about recycling and the importance of doing so to keep their community clean for years to come.  They were asked to end the unit with a recycling poster to show what they have learned.  The students did a wonderful job with this project!  They were very creative and loved the show and tell component of the project.  I now have most of their posters on the wall for all visitors to view once they come in to our room!

Enjoy the pictures!

Our class is privileged to have a Promethean board in our room.  Most people have never heard of Promethean boards much less know what they do.  I am here to tell you that it is the most wonderful piece of technology we have.

To put it simply, it is an interactive board that does EVERYTHING!!!  The students in my room have an advantage that most kids their age don’t have.  The Promethean board is a board that uses a special type of pen to write, manipulate objects, color, draw, size, and type while doing many other things at the same time.  Keeping 6 years olds attentive for longer than 30 seconds can be very challenging, but with the Promethean board the fun never ends.

The best thing about the board, is that the students think they are playing games all day!  It is that much fun!  It makes learning fun, interactive and it focuses on ALL learning styles in the same lesson!

I have attached some pictures below of the students using our Promethean board in class.  We use it all day long in EVERY subject, so there are several pictures of them throughout the day!  There are also some pictures of the students using our “testing eggs” (Promethean ActiVotes).  These are hand held devices that are used during a special test or quiz on the board.  All responses are anonymous except to the teacher and can then be put into a spreadsheet!

Enjoy the pictures and please feel free to come in and experience the fun of learning!  :)

For the past 3 weeks, we studied the sun and Earth’s relationship.  To end the unit, our class made a science project!  They all did so well!

The directions were to show how the Earth rotates creating day and night.

They worked so hard on their projects and were very proud of them, but I was the most proud!

Below are some pictures of their science projects and the creativity of 1st graders!

Way to go Room 105!!!

Dear Santa…

For this holiday season I decided to come up with a creative, yet fun way for my students to continue their writing practice.  This is the reason we decided to write letters to Santa! :)

The students took over a week writing their letters, proof reading them, then actually using the computer program KidPix to finalize their letters.

During this process, we had student “editors” who set up shop and welcomed new clients.  These selected student editors would help “their clients” by reading their letters and help with punctuation, spelling and grammar.  They had so much fun!

When they were done writing their letters using the KidPix program, we decided to VoiceThread all the letters!  They loved this part the most!

Below are some pictures of the whole process then the actual final product using the VoiceThread!  We hope you enjoy!

Reading

In first grade, we learn to read.  It is very difficult, but we try our hardest!  In our class we read with partners, in small groups and as a whole class.  Reading comprehension is when you understand what you just read.  We ask many questions along the way while we are reading to make sure we know what we read.

In our room we love to read new things!  We read fiction, and nonfiction stories.  Last week we read about life in a forest.  We learned that bears eat grubs they find under logs, and woodpeckers peck holes in the tree when they are looking for bugs to eat.   Hummingbirds flap their wings so fast that all you hear is a humming sound! :)   Life in a forest is very busy because there are many animals that live there all trying to eat and find a place to live!

We LOVE reading!!!  :)

Shadows

We just started a unit in science where we are studying the Earth and the sun.  This week we learned that shadows are caused by an image blocking the sun’s rays on the Earth.  While studying shadows, we did an experiment outside where each student drew their partner’s shadow.  They had so much fun with this!!!  Below are some pictures of our experiment! :)

We Are Thankful

As we get ready for the holiday, we have been writing about things that we are thankful for.  We used the Kid Pix program to create our pictures for the VoiceThread that we made.

Welcome parents to our new 1st grade blog!

Here you will be able to keep up to date with your child’s work and activities done in school.  I know all of you are very busy with work, school, and other activites and find it hard to visit school as often as you would like.  I hope that with this blog you will feel more connected with what your child does in school everyday!

We will post pictures and videos of your child working in the classroom on SOL related skills and activites.  You will be able to see a lot of their hard work and even see your child engaged in learning with our classroom technology on our Promethean board.

We hope you enjoy this site and visit as often as you can! :)
