Library Public Service Announcements

One of the interesting things about working of for the Office of Instructional Technology and Media Services (OITMS) is that TRTs and the Librarians have the same supervisor. Once a year we have a joint meeting. This year we will be having a worksession in which we are supposed to come up with a Public Service Announcement for our libraries. While searching for some ideas, Deloris Eure-Nutt (TRT for Hodges Manor and Lakeview) found this…

I was thinking about doing a series of posts about Christmas.  You know technology integrated sites or something.  I had almost given up on the idea, when I saw this…

Ok…so my PLN has a lot of great folks and they always share great stuff.  Today NedraI shared a site called BookWink.  It’s great!  Video booktalks on a variety of subjects.  I’m thinking of a host of uses for it in language arts and Library classes.  Take a look for yourself and see, and if I’ve emailed you with a link to this post you better believe that I’m thinking of using this site with you… www.bookwink.com

Video as an instructional strategy

Well, we all know that I can’t leave well enough alone.  What fun would that be?  So  I helped Mrs. Folston, the guidance supervisor, plan her first video today - she wants to learn to use movie maker.  Of course I told her that she ought to go see the PPS movie maker King (Brian Mckee) and Queen (Nancy Butler).  But anyway, working with Mrs. Folston got me thinking about the instructional uses of movie making.  I mean I know Charlottesville schools used movie making to bring up their writing scores.  Saw that article in Learning & Leading archives and have held the belief that if someone would turn me loose in fifth grade we could do great things…Oh!  I guess we did… Debbie Daniels and I worked on that all last year and look what our kids did.

OK,  I digress.  I was looking for some information on the instructional use of video, and I found handouts from a VSTE presentation (guess I missed that one) that show that creating a video can be used for every instructional strategy that we use in Portsmouth, from Marzano to Bloom to Multiple Intelligences.  Don’t believe me…look for yourself.  Ok so since we need to be using these strategies it seems movie making is a perfect fit ACROSS content areas.  So step right up.  Who’s going to be first to do movie making with me in September?
