Mrs. Taxson asked me to do a review activity with her class, so I decided to try out the VoiceThread application with them.  They had fun, I had fun, we all had fun!!  Wanna see what we did?  Check it out:

Thanks to Chrissy for the tutorial on embedding VoiceThreads. I would never have been able to figure it out on my own.

I love skip counting!!

I was absolutely thrilled when Mrs. Perry-Wallace asked me to come and teach her first graders to skip count.  I did skip counting with Mrs. Taxson’s class last year.  This year I wanted to do something a little different.  I used my wireless keyboard and mouse to let the students run portions of the PowerPoint and the web based interactive activities that we worked on.  If you have an idea for a lesson, let me know.  I’d love to work with you and your students and slip in some basic computer skills at the same time!!  Here are some of the sites we used:

October is Computer Learning Month

I’ve submitted the following article for the BES Newsletter (per Ms. Sallee’s request for a monthly article). According to the Computer Learning Foundation, Computer Learning Month is celebrated each October.   It is a time for focusing attention on the important role computers, software and other technologies play in our lives, particularly in our children’s learning and their future. During computer learning month we can encourage children to try new ways of using technology, to learn about new technology products, and to share their knowledge about how to use technology with others. Computer learning month is the perfect time to focus on the Basic Operation and Concepts strand of the computer/technology standards for Virginia’s public schools.  The websites listed below can help your child to learn introductory technology concepts.

Typing Game – helps students to become proficient in keyboarding skills

Computer terminology game

Technology game

Computer terms – picture & word matching

Technology buzzwords for students

In case you don’t know where to find them the computer technology standards can be found at http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Superintendent/Sols/compteck12.doc . Teachers are responsible to cover the appropriate standards as part of their regular instruction.  If you need help with meeting this requirement, please come see me.  It’s my job to help you figure out how to get this information included in your regular lessons.  Soma additional sites that you may find helpful towards this goal include:

Basic Operations and Concepts

Social and Ethical Issues

Technology Research Tools

If you need help with the remaining strands, just let me know.  I’ll get some resources to you.
